HERKIMER DIAMOND FAQ

What are Herkimer Diamonds?

A Herkimer Diamond is a type of quartz crystal that is found primarily in Herkimer county and the Mohawk River Valley in upstate New York.  Known for their unique double termination (points on both ends) and exceptional clarity, they are highly sought after by collectors. Herkimer Diamonds are not true diamonds, but are named for their diamond-like appearance.

What makes Herkimer Diamonds valuable?

Herkimer diamonds are valued for their natural beauty and unique characteristics. Some of the factors that contribute to their value include:

  1. Clarity: Herkimer diamonds are known for their high degree of transparency.

  2. Shape: The double-terminated (pointed at both ends) shape of Herkimer diamonds is considered rare and adds to their beauty and value.

  3. Hardness: Herkimer diamonds are made of quartz, which is a hard mineral (Mohs hardness of 7-7.5) that makes them durable and suitable for use in jewelry.

  4. Rarity: Herkimer diamonds are only found in one general location. This scarcity contributes to their value.

In addition to these factors, Herkimer diamonds are also believed to have metaphysical properties, such as promoting clarity and peace of mind, which adds to their appeal for some people.

Are Herkimer Diamonds real diamonds?

No, Herkimer diamonds are not real diamonds. They are a type of quartz crystal that is named after Herkimer County, New York, where they are primarily found. The name "Herkimer diamond" is used to describe their clear, diamond-like appearance, but they are not actual diamonds. Diamonds are a different mineral, made of carbon, and are much harder and more valuable than quartz.

How much is the average Herkimer Diamond worth?

The value of a Herkimer diamond can vary depending on several factors such as size, shape, clarity, and quality. The price of a small, lower-quality Herkimer Diamond typically ranges from $5 to $20, while larger, higher-quality crystals can sell for several hundred dollars or more. Some of our larger "goonie" Herkimer Diamonds have even been valued at thousands of dollars. However, the price of Herkimer diamonds can also be influenced by market demand, so the actual value can fluctuate. It is important to note that while Herkimer diamonds are often marketed as "diamonds," they are not actual diamonds and therefore do not have the same value.

How are Herkimer Diamonds Formed?

Herkimer Diamonds were formed over 500 million years ago during the Cambrian period. These crystals formed in pockets within ancient limestone and dolostone, which were once sea beds.

Over time, mineral-rich water seeped into these pockets, depositing silica and other minerals. The conditions in these pockets were ideal for the crystals to grow. The unique double-termination and exceptional clarity of Herkimer Diamonds are due to the particular environmental conditions during their formation. The crystals grew inside natural cavities in the rock, which allowed them to form without being disturbed or crushed, contributing to their distinctive appearance.
